In a given space and time, which crop produces the most overall calories?
For example, it seems to me that prickly pear cactus must be high on the efficienty meter since it produces fruit and the entire rest of the cactus can also be consumed. It seems to grow quickly and requires little maintenance (as long as it doesn’t receive too much water).
Thanks.

Is there any fast growing cactus’s with decent alkaloid content?
If searching for a cactus for it’s alkaloid content what should one stay away from or look for?
Is it a good idea to buy a cactus online? Or better to find somewhere they are sold?

I have a few cactus questions?

Feel free to answer all or any:
I bought some cactuses last year. They were in little pottery jars, and I transplanted them into yogurt cups with fresh dirt.
-1a; The dirt is looking kind-of stale. Should I try to extract the plants, throw out the old dirt, and move them into new yogurt cups with new dirt?
-1b; Ifso, should I poke holes in the bottom of the new cups? (I did last time.)
-2; One flourishing plant is growing out of a cup sharing what I think is a dead plant. Should I try and seperate them or just leave alone? (I ‘think’ it’s dead; Not sure.)
-3a; A couple plants are flimsy and I’ve tried to brace them with sticks and flexible wire so they stand up vertically. Should these be braced, or just let them grow sideways?
-3b; Ifso, how do you make a good brace?
