How can I start growing a prickly pear cactus in Minnesota?

I am wondering how people do this. I’ve seen the cactus growing in gardens in Minneapolis, but have never seen the plant for sale in nurseries. Could I start one from the cactus pads for sale in super market coolers? Anyone know?
